Theatre Night is part of the European Theatre Night that was founded in 2008 by the Croatian theatre makers. It has gradually spread to other European countries and is regularly taking place on the third November Saturday. In 2017, the Theatre Night will be held on November 18.

This year, the Czech Republic will host the annual fifth Theatre Night that will be united under the ‘Forever Young’ umbrella theme. In 2016, over 50.000 spectators attended the Theatre Night. It encompassed 130 ensembles and cultural institutions from 31 Czech and Moravian cities, making it again the biggest event of the European Theatre network.

Last year, large theatre houses together with small stages and individual theatre troupes participated in this event. The program was also enriched by other cultural organizations such as the Municipal Library in Prague and Václav Havel Library, and led by the Art and Theatre Institute that was the coordinator of the entire project. Theatres, theatre ensembles and cultural institutions prepared mainly commented, interactive or competitive tours of the backstage, rehearsal rooms or their archives. In addition to that, spectators could also see variety of performances, staged readings and separate acts. In the past year, several events were created especially for children, even in theatres that are not primarily focused on children audiences. The children's programs usually consisted of interactive performances, creative workshops as well as contests or competitions intended for not only children but also their parents.
